"CLOUD COMPUTING"
Our opinion

It's a great marketing phrase but, being IT professionals, we are naturally conservative and cautious when recommending the latest and greatest computing fad. We are not advocates of Internet backup or cloud computing.

We find many of our potential clients relying on Internet backup - only to find out, when disaster strikes, that they are backing up changes in files versus full daily backups. And some find that backups were partial or unsuccessful - losing valuable data and time. Recovering the data, from the Internet, is unreliable.

As consumers of technology, we have become accustomed to cloud technology in our personal lives, and it is natural to feel that we should rely on it in our business lives. But "cloud computing" is in it's infancy - and we do not recommend it as a primary backup for our clients. The number of hacking incidents alone should be a cautionary tale.

There are times, when old-fashioned methods continue to protect your assets better than the latest & the greatest new offering in technology.

Hacker attacks show vulnerability of cloud computing

June 17, 2011|
By David Sarno and Salvador Rodriguez | Los Angeles Times

Outsourcing computer tasks to firms that maintain huge data centers around the world may not be as safe as billed, despite the cloud's potential for cost savings and reducing the hassles of running in-house servers, security experts say.

As hackers continue their rampage against the world's largest banks, defense contractors and technology companies, executives and government officials are confronting a sobering truth: The bad guys are winning.

The seemingly unending string of high-profile attacks, most recently against Citigroup Inc. and Sony Corp., have shown that nearly every organization is vulnerable to a growing contingent of well-trained and agile attackers who are finding security holes faster than they can be plugged.
